Overview
#SaveJallikattu #VoiceForJallikattu – Chennai Protest.
What is Jallikattu?
Jallikattu is a traditional bull-taming sport practiced in Tamil Nadu as part of the Pongal celebrations, especially on Mattu Pongal day. It’s not just a sport – it’s a symbol of Tamil pride, agricultural heritage, and native cattle preservation. For over 2,000 years, Jallikattu has been a cultural identity for Tamils and a reflection of the close bond between the farmer and his cattle.
Why is Jallikattu Under Threat?
Despite its deep-rooted cultural and historical significance, Jallikattu has faced legal bans and opposition under the guise of animal rights. While animal welfare is important, these bans often ignore the realities on the ground and the native wisdom behind the sport. The ban not only affects the tradition but also puts native cattle breeds like Kangayam and Pulikulam at risk of extinction.
Why Are We Protesting?
We demand that Jallikattu be recognized, respected, and protected as a vital part of our tradition. The law must be inclusive and sensitive to cultural practices that define who we are as a people.
